Dunno why.) Soul Calibur is the sequel to Namco's 1996 weapons-based fighting game Soul Edge (aka Soul Blade on the Playstation). It deepens the game engine drastically, adding Tobal-like free movement, juggle escapes, stun recovery, and more. Prologue The dread pirate Cervantes stole the evil swords Soul Edge, got possessed by it and became the scourge of Europe's seas, even laying waste to his crew and home port. Then the Soul Edge rested and prepared to create the "Child of the Evil Swords" (whatever that is). In the meantime, legends of the Soul Edge's power arose and many sought it out for personal gain or to save their loved ones. The unfortunate few who actually confronted Cervantes and his blades--such as Li Long--fell victim to Soul Edge's power. Finally, Cervantes's reign of terror was ended when Sophitia succeeded in shattering one of the swords. Though she was wounded by the resultant shrapnel, she was saved from the pirate's wrath by the intervention of Taki, who defeated Cervantes and retreated with the wounded girl and a piece of the broken Soul Edge. But in her haste to save Sophitia's life, she left a big loose end. Siegfried arrived soon after to take the Soul Edge for his misguided vengeance, but he only found Cervantes's body. Still, the sword looked sturdy; perhaps it was even the one he sought. Before he could take it, however, the pirate's body burst into hellish flame. The spirit of Soul Edge had materialized to do battle! Despite the apparition's power, the battle ended with the victory of the mad Siegfried. Though his huge zweihander sword was broken, Soul Edge was his to claim!... That night, people all along the Spanish coast saw a pure white column of light spread through the sky. Some moves only work if you or foe is in this position. CD: this move is a Crouch Dash. Ducks high attacks. CH: Counterhit. Interrupting a foe's attack offers greater damage and special properties to your own. CLNH: Clean Hit. DLY: this move is delayable--i.e. you can pause before entering a command instead of committing to the whole thing at the outset. F: Far. Usually affects damage. FC: Fully Crouched. Some moves can only be done from this position. FD: Laying Face Down. Rare knockdown position. GH: Ground Hits. Move hits an opponent Laying Down or Face Down. GI: Guard Impact. Deflects attacks. LD: Laying Down on back. Normal knockdown position. N: Near. Usually affects damage. RC: This move recovers crouching. Any While Standing attack will link. Below it is an alternate command available while you're 8-Way Running (signified by the "8"). Both versions share the same Hit and Damage stats. They do a bit more hurt near (shown by "N") than far ("F"). Occassionally these stats will differ with alternate versions. For instance, the normal move above may cause a Double Over Stun if it counterhits (it doesn't, really, but I wanted to use an example), while the other would not. In any case, both versions can be modified into a Delayed move or Unblockable by holding B as indicated by the "=" tags. In some cases, whole other moves can be linked one after another. And notice the change in stats: the Delay now staggers (shown by the "*") and the Unblockable is, well, unblockable (shown by the "!") and does more damage regardless of distance F. But he's a much deeper fighter than Rock was. His strength is unmatched. He's slow, but the long range of his moves offsets this weakness. He fights best at mid-range, so fighters who like to play zone games will find themselves shoved around by the big guy a lot. In close, Astaroth has throws galore as well as a couple of fast short-range moves. Finally, Astaroth is the dark lord of unblockable moves with a total of 10. The sheer number makes it difficult for foes to know which way to dodge when they see the dreaded lightning. Astaroth is critcized for being scrub-friendly; with his range, power and occasionally surprising speed, it's not hard to see why. WIN POSES :Does beats chest once, twice, three times, then raises a fist. Each action is accompanied by a different color flash and an explosion. :Similar to Rock, he twirls axe and slams the head on the ground, holding the handle upright and planting a boot on the blade. :Twirls axe heavily overhead, then slashes the blade into the floor viciously. : TIME LOSS Falls to his knees, dropping his axe, and holds his head in his hands. HWANG =============================== Hwang Sung Kyung, aka the Patriot with the Burning Soul Age: 28 Height: 5'7" Weight: 137 Weapon: Chinese sword "Blue Thunder" Fighting style: Hwang's Long Blade Nation: Korea Stage: Remains in the Desert BGM: Beyond the Horizon Hwang, upon learning that his homeland was falling under attack, returned to help defend it. On the way back, he found Seung Mina, his master's daughter, and brought her home as well. She soon ran off again, but Hwang was now committed to his command in the Coastal Defense Force. However, the stress worrying about the girl and the constant guerilla tactics of the enemy got the better of Hwang. Losing his inner calm, he was baited into chasing a small pirate ship which cost the lives of many of his men. Hwang was dismissed as commander and ordered to return to the quest for Soul Edge. But underneath the official order was also a secret mission--to find the missing Mina as well. This time, he rips off Xianghua's style. However, he retains all his non-Mitsurugi moves from Soul Edge. He's a powerful fighter, even though he shares some of the weaknesses of Xian's style (overly complex and not direct enough). His increased strength, simpler moves and comparable speed make him easily a match for any of the regulars. He seems to have a few more and further-reaching low hits than most. WIN POSES G: Swings sword about 4 times before spinning to a one-knee crouch with his sword stretched straight to the right and his free hand on the floor. A: Backflips, lands into splits, jumps into a 360 twist, and lands loudly in a low crouch with his sword arm outstretched. IVY =============================== aka Isabella Valentine, "S&M Queen" Age: 28 Height: 6' Weight: 128 Weapon: the snake sword Ivy Blade Fighting style: Unrelated link? Nation: England Stage: the Valentine Mansion BGM: Unblessed Soul Ivy's dad went crazy chasing the Soul Edge, ruining the Valentine family fortune. Her parents died soon after, but not before they told her she was adopted. In settling her father's affairs, the grief-stricken girl learned of Soul Edge and set out to find it and destroy it for ruining her and so many others' lives. But she needed a powerful weapon to match the demon blade. Even the Sword-Whip she designed wouldn't be enough. She turned to the occult, obsessive in her search for the power--just like her adoptive father. Finally, a demon or something bonded with her weapon and snapped the last thread of her sanity (Oooh, that smarts). Now her quest to best Soul Edge begins.
